Meet Martin
Martin Blake has been the owner manager of Australian Auto Gates since 1992, when he started Australian Auto Gates in a small factory in Sydney’s south at Peakhurst.
By 2000, the business had grown substantially and Martin moved into a larger factory at Padstow, Australian Auto Gates was based in Padstow until 2020, when the opportunity came up for Martin to purchase an old factory 5 minutes across the M5 from Padstow on the edge of Bankstown, a full refurbishment of the Bankstown factory and office was carried out to allow for bulk storage gate of gate operators and parts, allowing more stock to be held in house reducing wait time on repairs and replacement motors for clients ensuring their security could be restored without having to wait on stock orders to come in from suppliers.

It was not long after the Bankstown factory fit out was completed and fully stocked that Covid reared its ugly head. In general, stock in the industry became scarce as most of it is imported from Europe, in particular Italy, many motors and parts all of a sudden had over six months lead in time, which was a huge issue for our clients needing urgent security gate repairs and replacement systems fitted to restore security.
Australian Auto Gates, due to having a fully stocked factory, was able to continue as normal due to the volume of gate motors and parts in stock ensuring clients security was never interrupted during this tumultuous few years. It was an eye opener to run a security service business through Covid with valuable lessons learned.
Martin’s Expertise & Experience
Martin is a licensed electrician and holds the higher level licence with NSW Fair Trading as a ‘Qualified Electrical Supervisor’ along with his manufacturing background Martin’s skills have made him one of the most experienced and sought after consultants in the industry of Automatic Security Gate Systems.
These skills have seen Martin and the team called in to resolve many difficult Security Gate issues over the years. Our clients even from back in the 1990s are still valued clients today that Australian Auto Gates is proud to have relationships with! Martin understands our client’s need for reliable security, many of these clients are private people who place trust in Australian Auto Gates to ensure the decisions made regarding their security will keep their homes, family and business secure. Martin has always ensured the team at Australian Auto Gates are well skilled in Automatic Gate Systems, he does not use contractors as he understands the importance of having well trained technicians, a team that communicates and meets regularly to discuss our client’s systems ensuring excellent service and installations for our clients that reflect Martin’s values.
Martin’s office manager Linda joined Australian Auto Gates in 2003. Linda has an incredible knowledge in the industry and is well known with Australian Auto Gates clients – she is the glue that keeps the team running efficiently.
What is one of your favourite projects in your time running Australian Auto Gates?
In the early 1990’s not long after I established Australian Auto Gates I was approached by one of the head architects at ‘John R Brogan and Associates’ who was working on the expansion of Bunnings Warehouses throughout Australia as Wesfarmers had just acquired Bunnings. I worked with the senior architects to support them in the design of the Automatic Boom Gate and Security Gate Systems, which resulted in Australian Auto Gates winning contracts to fit out many of the new Bunnings Warehouse stores throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland when they started their expansion, it was exciting to be a part of, as Australia had never seen a retail warehouse of this scale before and it was a privilege to be a part of this expansion, especially so early in our company’s career.
I still remember loading up our box trailers with boom gates and access systems and watching them head out to sites in Queensland and Victoria from our Peakhurst and Padstow factories, great times.
What do you love about the industry?
The people, we have worked with amazing clients and our team for over thirty years, I still get a kick out of calling in to a site when our technicians are carrying out a service or refurbishment that we’ve installed, some of these systems were originally installed thirty years ago, our clients are happy to see me and catch up, our clients have gotten to know us over the years and are always happy for a chat when I show up, quite often a coffee and a tour of what they’re doing around their house, I understand their security is everything to them and they trust us, this means a lot to myself as a business owner.
What is your recommendation when engaging a company to install or service their Automatic Security Gate System?
Most importantly make sure they have an electrical contractor licence, you don’t want some handyman having a go at a system that runs costly electrical control boards and electrical components, if these systems are not set up properly they will fail quickly costing a lot of money in repairs, they also don’t understand the electrical settings to ensure the systems work safely, which is paramount when you have pedestrians, pets and vehicles in the proximity of these security gate systems, we’ve seen some terrible outcomes in our time due to poor quality installations, that should never have been accepted by the client, but the issues don’t occur until after the installation is paid for and then the clients are stuck when they cannot get the company to return.
What is a memorable moment with your systems (good or bad)?
Lots of great memorable moments, but yes we had one not so good. Actually, it was a disaster, but not due to our systems, we had installed approximately 250 Automatic Parking Bollards throughout a large underground commercial car park in Sydney many years ago, it was a new construction and the plumbers accidentally flooded the underground carpark, let’s just say the Automatic Bollards did not like sitting underwater for an extended amount of time, they’re water resistant, but not flood proof, they were brand new so it was heartbreaking to see but all turned out OK in the end.

Some brands of automatic gates and gate motors on the market are not able to be easily serviced as parts are not available in Australia.
Australian Auto Gates can advise you if your automated gate system is supported with spare parts and able to be serviced.
We can also repair or refurbish your old automatic gates.
